discovering wellness

ask dr. kim

Dear Dr. Kim:

How can I detox my system?

There are many forms of detoxification that one should be aware of. There are detoxifications and cleansing treatments for colon and bowels, bladder and kidneys, gallbladder and liver, chelation therapies, lung and mucus congestion, blood cleansings including heavy metal poisoning, alcohol, drug addictions, (prescription and recreational, both habit forming), parasitic and candida detoxing, skin cleansing, lymphatic cleansing and detoxification through cleansing diets, juicing and fasting.

In this day and age we are over exposed to harmful chemicals, residue, radiation, environmental toxins, polluted water, hormones, preservatives, additives and heavy metals just to name a few. These substances invade our bodies faster than the body can emit them causing toxic overload in every part of our system producing harmful effects in our state of health.

Many of these toxins become encased in mucus or fat. These deposits are then set aside in your body as a protection so that they cannot cause damage to your cells, organs and tissues.  Many people carry 10-20 pounds or more of extra fat in their body that was created to house this toxic waste. It is not just excess fat but EXCESS TOXIC FAT that your body cannot cycle through because it is so extremely overloaded by more and more waste day in and day out... so the pounds continue to pile on.

Detoxing is very helpful in warding off disease. Although, it should not be used only for preventative measures alone but also for those already in a chronic state of ill health. I don’t care what your disease is called, if the symptoms of that disease are chronic then you MUST cleanse to reverse that disease and regain your health.

There are over 2 million synthetic substances on our fragile planet already and unfortunately this number is increasing with at least 25,000 more each year. The World Health Organization states that 60-80% of all cancers are caused directly by environmental toxins. How sad it is what we are collectively and consciously doing to our precious planet.

If you suffer from headaches, chronic back or joint pain, sinus or respiratory problems, allergies, asthma, skin disorders, brittle hair and nails, unexplained weight gain, poor memory recall or disconnected thought patterns (feeling spaced out), chronic fatigue, insomnia, irritability, depression, uncontrollable mood swings, bad breath, body odor, a coated tongue or just feel sick and tired all over and it cannot be medically explained as to why, then you are most likely experiencing toxic overload.

Your body is designed to handle only so much junk that doesn‘t belong. You wouldn’t think of forcing your car to run for even 1, let alone up to 100+ years without a filter or oil change, would you? We cannot replace our filters or oil (blood), not without pain, transfusions and being on a long waiting list for a transplant that is, so we need to cleanse them periodically throughout the year...every year!  If you think about it, your body has probably been pretty forgiving thus far because if you treated your car the same way  you treat your body it would probably be sitting in a junkyard years ago.

I would suggest seeing your natural healthcare practitioner so that you can learn about maintenance detoxification and determine which type is needed for you specifically so you can begin your path to discovering wellness.

Dear Dr. Kim:

What is dry brushing? I have heard it mentioned but am not sure of its benefits concerning my health.

Dry brushing is a very important modality that should be included in everyone's daily regimen and especially those with health concerns.  It is a cleansing and detoxifying procedure using a natural fiber bristled brush.

Our skin is known as the third lung, which needs to breathe and be allowed oxygenation. Removing the dead skin cells allows the body to emit toxic waste.

Dry brushing also stimulates electrical nerve impulses, initiating the flow of chi throughout the meridian system. Also, aids the flow of lymph fluid, which is extremely important, as it is a vital part of the eliminating, and disposal system, which rids debris from the body. One of the lymph functions is to carry toxins to the bloodstream, cycling to the liver and kidneys where it can then be excreted from the body.

Dry brushing will also break down cellulite deposits and improves blood circulation, which in turn improves oxygenation of the tissues, organs and cells.

When utilizing dry brush massage always use several circular strokes at each area and start at the extremities working towards the heart since near the upper chest area on both sides of the sternum is where the lymph system drains into the circulatory system.

Use dry brushing on a daily basis before showering or bathing. The brush and skin must always be dry. Do not brush before bedtime, as this may be stimulating to the system and hinder sleep. Wash your brush gently with mild soap at least once every two weeks.
